GOOD GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION (with some bad elements): Phoenix Arizona Map
The central elements of this graphic give a viewer a strong sense of the layout and orientation of Phoenix Arizona in this time period. It provides the viewer with a "personal micro-reading" of Phoenix. The illustrations on the edges of the map, are essentially chart junk. Obviously, someone thought they made the map more attractive, but detract from the information and purpose of the map.

SOMEWHAT BAD GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION: ARPANET Map 1971
While this map shows a clear illustration of the ARPANET network, it provides viewers without previous knowledge of either the network, colleges, and abbreviations with an incomplete picture. If a viewer does not know what each abbreviation stands for and where those insitutions where/are located the map only provides a viewer with a series of connection points that relay little meaning.

WHEN GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATIONS GO BAD:American Statistical Association Competition Entrant
Looking beyond the poor quality of this image, I was challenged to find any representation that provided me with a clear illustration of data. I do give the author some credit, because he or she was a sixth grader at the time and did not realize that the chart styles, colors, and position would makke it difficult to interpret.
